Details of the Opportunity:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Patient Care:
Complete medical forms and documentation related to patient care including any necessary to facilitate transfer, and if indicated, referrals to outside programs or psychiatric clinics
Make and/or track all referrals to other mental health agencies and providers
Consult with primary care providers to focus on psychiatric and substance abuse issues
Work collaboratively with specialists for consultation and referral purposes
Coordinate patient's psychiatric care with medical clinic and shelter staff, as well as outside providers
Provide further guidance in person, or by telephone, when the psychologist and/or clinical staff may need counseling advice for patients
Provide weekly supervision for the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners to assist with and discuss cases
Coordinate emergency responses, including a team to minimize patient's danger to self and others, direct discussion with EMS/FDNY regarding patient's condition, referral to psychiatric or medical emergency departments and follow-up while patient is in the emergency department or upon release
Maintain ultimate responsibility for directing the course of the patient's psychiatric care and treatment plan within the scope of his/her expertise
Encourage health promotion, disease prevention, and health maintenance.
Provide patient advocacy, as appropriate for the site
May provide in-service training for professional and administrative staff, in collaboration with the Chief Medical Officer
Participate in case-conference and case management activities

Administrative Duties:
Monitor the services provided by psychologists and substance counselors through a Peer Review Process, including, but not limited to, a quarterly chart review
Meet with TFH psychologists and substance abuse counselors on a monthly basis, to discuss/implement recommendations and collaborate toward delivering quality psychiatric services to patients, based on accepted standards of care consistent with NYSDOH Article 31 mandates. Meetings are held at a central location, allowing clinicians to benefit from the experiences of their colleagues
Provide supervision to TFH psychologists based, in part, upon the needs of individual service providers. An important focus is to impart training to fully appreciate the concerns and acquire the skills necessary to work effectively with staff and patients who comprise homeless shelters
Document meetings and specific recommendations made to TFH psychologists, toward improving the quality of psychiatric services to patients. These recommendations are to be submitted to the Chief Medical Officer for review on at minimum a quarterly basis and will contribute to the Peer Review and Performance Review processes at TFH
Collaborate with the Medical Records Department to ensure appropriate documentation procedures; discuss such issues with TFH psychologists
Observe, implement, and promote the federal regulations as defined by HIPAA and Policies and Procedures
Make suggestions to Chief Medical Officer to improve patient care
Initiate and participate in research related to health care or allied fields, in collaboration with the Chief Medical Officer
Assignment, Review and Approval of Work:
The Chief Medical Officer may assign other duties and projects as needed.

Background and Education:
Board eligible or certified by American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology; current New York State license. Must maintain all requirements of the APA and ABPN.
