Southern Illinois University School of Medicine (SIU Medicine), in partnership with M3 Executive Search, is conducting a national search for a highly collaborative physician leader to serve as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery. The division of orthopedic surgery at SIU Medicine is a leader in high quality education, cutting-edge research, and comprehensive, technologically advanced patient care for patients throughout central and southern Illinois. The multidisciplinary team of orthopedic surgeons and staff diagnose and treat disorders affecting the spine, arm, hand, leg, knee, and other areas of the body. Specialty areas include diabetic foot and ankle care, pediatric orthopedics, orthopedic oncology, joint replacement and spine, trauma, and fracture care.

For more than 50 years, SIU Medicine has been an innovative leader in medical education and a key player in the development of the regional academic medical center in Springfield. Memorial Health of Springfield is a community-based, not for profit corporation dedicated to patient care, education, and research and is one of the leading healthcare organizations in Illinois. Since 1970, Springfield Memorial Hospital, formerly known as Memorial Medical Center, has been a teaching hospital affiliated with SIU Medicine for the purpose of providing clinical training for residents.

The Chief of Orthopedic Surgery will join and lead a division of board-certified orthopedic surgeons who are supported by dedicated advanced practitioners and nursing staff. The ideal candidate would support the development of clinical care pathways, keeping in trend with changing literature, and do so in a collaborative manner with subspecialists. Basic responsibilities will include maintain a clinical practice in orthopedic surgery, supporting education of surgical residents and medical students, and providing mentorship to early career faculty.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Leading all external recruitment efforts in support of growth and development goals, including recruitment of Orthopedic Surgery faculty
  • Provide administrative leadership for the Division of Orthopedics and develop programs and related budgets pertaining to the division.
  • Leading all internal and external stakeholder engagements, including developing collaborative relationships with key clinical practices, hospitals and health systems within SIU Medicine’s primary and extended markets
  • Insure balanced and integrated education programs in the field of orthopedics and rehabilitation including undergraduate medical education, the basic surgical and orthopedic residency programs, continuing education and intra and multidisciplinary surgical programs.
  • Working to implement, develop, and grow research initiatives related to Orthopedic Surgery
  • Participating in succession planning and planned growth as related to Orthopedic Surgery

The Chief will have an outstanding clinical reputation and a proven track record as a clinical leader with at least 5 years post residency/fellowship experience in a leadership role. They will have an academic background with a focus on building a top reputation clinical program.

The Chief will possess a MD, DO, MD/DO/PhD, or equivalent degree along with board certification in orthopedic surgery. The successful candidate will have a record commensurate with appointment at the rank of associate or full professor.
