Big Spring State Hospital is at the forefront of person-centered, trauma-informed, recovery-oriented care and seeks a dynamic psychiatrist to work with medically and behaviorally complex individuals. Our staff contribute to a work culture of collegiality and respect with goals of continuous quality improvement. Demands are high, as are the rewards. Supports include a strong nursing staff, an excellent pharmacy department and an on-site medical clinic. The Psychiatrist III position primarily focuses on Inpatient Psychiatry at Big Spring State Hospital which predominantly admits adult forensic/civil patients with serious mental illness, as well as co-occurring disorders (substance abuse, intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, and medical illness), and possible involvement in the criminal justice system. The psychiatrist will provide both leadership and support to recovery team members and to facility clinical functions. As such, an ability to work with all disciplines, from direct care staff to consulting physicians, is essential for the provision of optimal care plans with the ultimate goal of partnering with our regional associates to integrate our clients back in to the community or return to the judicial system for adjudication, etc. In addition to general psychiatric evaluation and treatment, specific duties include evaluation of commitment needs, testifying in court hearings, supervision of nurse practitioners, supervision of psychiatric residents, participation in clinical and system committees, etc. Up-to-date psychopharmacology knowledge, electronic health record usage and general computer skills are key requirements. Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned. 1. Provides leadership to the multidisciplinary recovery team in the development of recovery plans, evaluation of ongoing care, and discharge planning. 2. Manages acute care including prescribing emergency medications, ordering emergency behavioral interventions, and coordinating consultations and transfers if the person requires acute interventions for non-psychiatric medical conditions. 3. Prepares medical certificates, testifies in commitment hearings. 4. Participates in facility committees as assigned to ensure patients are receiving efficient effective clinical care, such Pharmacy and Therapeutics, Infection Control, and Medical Staff Committee. 5. Participates in mandatory training per HHS policies and procedures, HIPAA policies, state and federal rules and regulations, and hospital accreditation requirements. 6. Evaluates, diagnoses, prescribes, and supervises treatment using a trauma-informed, person-centered, recovery model of care. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.

Skills
Knowledge Skills Abilities:
1. Knowledge of methods and procedures in general psychiatry and general medicine and of principles of the development, implementation, and documentation of individualized care and treatment plans. 2. Exercise skill in the care and treatment of patients; in the use of medical and psychiatric diagnostic and treatment tools and equipment; and in the documentation of medical care. 3. Ability to adhere to facility policies and procedures, agency rules and regulations, state and federal statue and regulation, and facility accreditation requirements. 4. Skill in effectively using an electronic healthcare system.
Registration or Licensure Requirements:
1. Valid unrestricted Texas Medical License with current registration 2. Board certification or board eligibility in psychiatry 3. DEA Certificate - Unrestricted
