Psychiatrist III

The SHS is a hub of excellence for forensic mental health and complex psychiatric care, with all facilities accredited by The Joint Commission. The hospitals provide state-of-the-art treatment that is recovery-oriented and science-based. The Adolescent Forensic Program Psychiatrist provides psychiatric evaluations, care, and treatment to the patients at North Texas State Hospital and services such as an effective champion of the Social Learning approach to treatment. The Psychiatrist is the clinical leader of a Treatment Team providing guidance to other treatment team members regarding the treatment of the patients under their care. Completion of duties required complex decision making within the guidelines laid out in the data sources referenced herein. The Psychiatrist functions under the sole supervision of the Chief Psychiatrist or Assistant Medical Director. The Psychiatrist takes an active role in leadership and demonstration of the program practices, social learning principles, and serves as a teacher, trainer, coach, and mentor for both patients and staff. The Psychiatrist supports and promotes the matrix schedule of activities by taking an active role in assuring that the therapeutic activities of his / her treatment team conform to the prescribed schedule. Knowledge of the social learning program is evident through participation and leadership in all treatment team settings including QIT meetings and cross – disciplinary shift reports.

HIPPA Access: Health Care: PHI 1-B. This employee has full access to a limited set of records in accordance with HIPPA regulations. Initially, the psychiatrist's duties will consist mostly of completing Physician's Certificates of Medical Examination, and testifying in court for recommitments and court-ordered medications, for all patients on the Vernon campus. In the future, depending on circumstances, the psychiatrist may switch to a more traditional role as leader of a treatment team with a patient caseload on one of the programs of the Vernon campus.

The Vernon South Campus serves as a long-term treatment center for adolescents ranging from 13 to 17-years old. The Vernon North Campus serves the forensic and psychiatric needs of adults in a maximum-security setting.

Skills
Knowledge Skills Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of medicine, general psychiatry, forensic psychiatry and community psychiatry. Knowledge and understanding of the Administrative Policies and Procedures, Medical Staff By-laws, Rules and Regulations, and DSHS Administrative Law. A demonstrated ability to evaluate patients and develop appropriate treatment plans and implement effective treatment. Skills in leading and coordinating activities of the interdisciplinary treatment team in in-patient evaluation, treatment plan development, treatment implementation, and documentation of all phases of treatment.
Registration or Licensure Requirements:
A license to practice medicine in Texas plus successful completion of a residency in psychiatry, approved by the Accreditation Counsel for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or equivalent body. Thorough knowledge of and clinical skills in general psychiatry, forensic psychiatry and community psychiatry.
